march 5 rally

As I'm sure you're all aware Paterson's proposed budget cuts and the CUNY
Board of Trustees proposed tuition hikes are going to have disastrous
effects on Hunter and CUNY in general.
The UFT and other major labor unions
have called for a mass demonstration against the budget cuts in front of
City Hall on
March 5.  Various CUNY organizations, including the CCU and the
CUNY Student Unions, are organizing a CUNY rally at BMCC to specifically
protest the CUNY budget cuts/tuition hikes and will then march as a group
down to the larger rally to join with other unions.

The Hunter Student Union is mobilizing the students here at Hunter by
calling for a Student Walk Out Against the Tuition Hikes/Budget Cuts.  We
will walk out at 2pm on Thurs March 5th, have a rally outside of Hunter
West, and then go as a group down to the larger CUNY/labor rally downtown.
We feel that a student walk out is important because we, the students and
faculty at Hunter, need to take back our school and the only way that we can
do this is by all coming out together and making our voices heard
collectively, regardless of our varying class schedules.  However, we do not
want to present this walk out as against the faculty in any way, but instead
want to work together with the professors.

The Hunter Student Union would like the opportunity to come and talk with
your Thursday classes for about 5 min. and present your students with this
action.  If the students support the action we were thinking of having them
vote as a group to support the action and either walk out at 2 pm or if the
classes are later to call off class and go to the protest instead.  By
having the vote we hope that students will feel that they are taking an
active part in the protest, and also professors will then not be the ones
calling class, but rather the students.  We know that the semester is short
and that there is a lot of material to cover, but if these budget
cuts/tuition hikes pass then many students will not be able to afford go to
class at all, and many professors will be threatened with less classes, more
students, and possibly loss of jobs
.

The One New York coalition, of which the PSC is a member, is sponsoring a rally at City Hall on March 5 to make visible New Yorkers’ – and the NYC labor movement’s – support for fair share tax reform <http://fairsharereform.com/>  as the best and smartest way to deal with the city and state budget problems. The PSC supports the proposed legislation before the State Senate to close the budget gap by asking New Yorkers who make more than $250,000 a year to pay a bit more. The PSC contingent will meet at 3:30 at the main entrance to BMCC, 199 Chambers Street and march together to join thousands of our allies at City Hall. Students, members, allies are all welcome.
