    PORTFOLIO UPDATE / MIGRATION PATH

We are revising the template for the FILMP/MEDP 150/160 Portfolio website. Our hope is to make the site easier for you to modify and a bit simpler.

The basic idea behind HTML is to separate content from the style in which it is displayed.

You will be replacing the HTML pages, and the CSS code page, while leaving the rest of your material in place. You will then relink the new HTML pages to the content you have been creating, such as your artist's statement, your photos, etc.

You are editing your site 'live' on the server.

The first step will be to pull a copy of the two relevant folders out of the SITES folder in your section of the server and keep them on the desktop. The best way to do this is probably to make a folder on the desktop labeled 'OLDSITE'.The idea here is that if there is a problem with the new site, you can always just put back the old site structure and start over.

The next step is to replace the two folders (HTML and CODE) on your site with the new ones.

This will give you a new site. However, the pages will not link properly to your old material. You will need to go through and rebuild the links, particularly to your still images, but also to your blog, your podcast, etc.

You will need to actually cut and paste your Artist Statement into the new index page. You can find it buried in the code for the old index page.

TIP:One way to make the migration slightly less confusing is to use the color coding option available on Macs. For instance, label the new files and folders green, and the old ones red, so you can sort out what is what.
