TA Prep Sheet Lab 2
By the end of the Lab, students should be able to/ have accomplished
o Finish previous portfolio – artist statements & bio pic if necessary
o (if this can’t be done is class, assign for homework)
o View examples of different film camera formats
o Learn how to load FILMO 16mm camera
Introduction to Canon FS10 HD video camera – students will shoot with the cameras in class but will not save the footage

o Make note of trip to Museum (week of Feb 23) and collect student availability.

Lab Demo / Practicum
Finish portfolio - photo and artist statement if necessary
Introduction to FILMO and Arri 16mm camera
Show different film formats – 35mm, 16mm, 8mm
Demonstration of Victorian Toy ‘persistence of motion’
FILMO CAMERA – use this camera for demo
These cameras were used in the Korean war by CBS, they will use the in Hunter film production classes
Demonstration of how to load camera
KEY ELEMENTS
-Emulsion side faces lens
-Take up reel / Supply reel
-Pressure plate
-Aperture, Shutter
-Hand crank
-24 fps – frames per second
-Claw – used to advance perforation
-Single vs. double perforated film
CANON FS10 video camera
KEY ELEMENTS
-Can be used as a still or video camera
-This camera shoots 60i (29.97fps in Final Cut Pro) more about this will be discussed in future classes
-Records mpeg4 HD to SD cards
-Camera should be used in program (P) mode
This will allow for automatic white balance and exposure
-Always shoot in XP (best quality) mode
-When they begin the lab they must INITIALIZE the card to erase previous footage
Turn camera on in movie mode
Select FUNCTION on LCD menu
Move JOG WHEEL to Menu – press jog wheel to select
Scroll down to INITIALIZE – press jog wheel to select
Select BUILT-IN MEM – CARD – press jog wheel to select
Select INITIALIZE
-Explain how to save to ‘movie card’
Turn camera on in movie mode
Select FUNCTION on LCD menu
Move JOG WHEEL to Menu – press jog wheel to select
Scroll down to MEMORY OPER. – press jog wheel to select
Scroll down to MEDIA:MOVIES – press jog wheel to select
Select CARD – this saves to SD card
If this is not selected all footage will be erased
-Make sure under CAMERA setup in MENU, WIDESCREEN is ON for 16:9
-Explain the camera wheel on Back – Still camera, Video, Movie playback, still image viewer
-The students will be responsible for capturing their footage during class time – this class they will not save footage and main goal is to get comfortable with the menu and workflow of using these cameras in class.
