    Although there is no lab specific to this lecture, these are the concepts that I might put in an exam.

    Data Storage: Punch cards/paper tape/ later magnetic tape, floppy disk, hard drive

    Data Processing

    Data Retrieval/ playback

    Computer Program

    a computer 'operation' = addition, subtraction, greater or less than, etc.

    computer programming language (e.g. Fortran, C++, BASIC, etc.)

    microcomputer/ mainframe computer

    Disk operating System/ DOS and OS Operating System

    ASCii = American Standard Code for Information Interchange

    GUI = Graphic User Interface

    Mac OS

    Windows

    Proprietary Software / open platform software

    digital = discrete integers

    binary number = base 2

    single switch = single 'bit' of information

    8 bits = 1 byte

    RAM = random access memory

    CPU = central processing unit

    Input/output devices: keyboard, mouse, monitor, printer

    Data Storage device: hard drive, flash memory, floppy disc, CD, DVD
